The other day at our manager’s meeting, I threw out the question, “What skills have you learned at Mt. Gilead that you have found invaluable?” One of the replies made me laugh, but I immediately understood what Program Manager Grace Seder meant when she replied, “Scrappy”. The definition is “to have a determined spirit; feisty”. To work at Mt. Gilead in the last few summers, perhaps more than prior summers, has meant being courageous and determined. To be undaunted in the midst of fires at close range, pandemics, mandates, staff shortages, accidents and spiritual opposition. These were not mere possibilities of things that could happen”…they did happen and our staff showed up ready to serve steady, strong, and calm. This tenacity…or scrappiness reminds me of someone in Scripture, namely the Apostle Paul. Here are his words:
“We put no stumbling block in anyone’s path, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses; in beatings, imprisonments and riots; in hard work, sleepless nights and hunger; in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love; in truthful speech and in the power of God; with weapons of righteousness in the right hand and in the left; through glory and dishonor, bad report and good report; genuine, yet regarded as impostors; known, yet regarded as unknown; dying, and yet we live on; beaten, and yet not killed; sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; poor, yet making many rich; having nothing, and yet possessing everything.” 2 Corinthians 6:3-10
Paul had a holy scrappiness about him…a determined spirit. Our staff are made up of people with holy scrappiness…they don’t quit when adversity strikes, rather they pray more, cheer each other on and press forward within God’s strength.
As we head into 2022, we are looking for some folks with scrappiness that are surrendered to Jesus. If you or someone you know is interested in serving with us, check out our website and apply on line. You won’t regret the work of serving Jesus on the front lines…it is an opportunity of a lifetime…watching Jesus transform lives before your eyes. Don’t miss out.
“For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.” 2 Chronicles 16:9
