Moms… Risk Camp
When my husband and I were kids we never attended summer camp, it wasn’t even a thought in our minds or our parent’s minds. Ironically, our children, however, have been immersed in camp since the day we brought them home from the hospital (we actually live in a camp home). Even though I hate to admit, I worried just like any other parent when my kids were bunking with 7 other little kids for the first time without mom around. Even though I worried, I saw amazing growth in their lives because of those weeks of Junior Camp.
I witnessed them take ownership of their faith. They read their Bibles because they wanted to learn and grow, not because Mom and Dad expected them to have devotions. They were excited about teaching from the chapel speakers and their counselors. They learned new truths about how to apply biblical teachings to their every day life. They learned to appreciate our family more. While they were “away” from home they came to appreciate that they have a rich Christian heritage that not everyone has. They learned self-discipline with regard to taking care of themselves, brushing their teeth, eating good food and getting sleep. I think most importantly they learned as they met many other Christian kids …that they were not alone.
At Mt. Gilead my kids were blessed to be in the Body of Christ with kids their own age for a whole week. It was the kind of fellowship that doesn’t happen every day, especially in Sonoma County. So while, it can be a frightening as a parent to send that junior camper off to camp for the first time the rewards are priceless.
